Sciatica

Sciatica is a common complaint and is a term used to describe pain and other symptoms that run along the path of the sciatic nerve, which extends from the lower back through the bottom and typically down to the lower leg. This pain can be caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve and may include symptoms such as pins and needles, numbness, a burning sensation, and muscle weakness in the leg. The pain can range from mild to severe and you may also experience shooting pain. Sciatica pain can be triggered by many factors, such as heavy lifting, poor posture, disc herniation and prolonged sitting. Sciatica is not usually serious but ideally needs examination to identify the root cause so appropriate advice may be given, and either treatment with the osteopath or a referral for further investigation.
