Neck Pain

Neck pain is most commonly caused by poor posture and age-related degeneration. However, other causes include nerve compression, injuries like whiplash, muscle tension caused by overuse, emotional stress,
and certain diseases.
-
Poor Posture – Postural muscle strain in your neck can be caused by use, such as looking down at phones, tablets or computers. Slouching, sitting for prolonged periods and sleeping in awkward positions can increase risk.
-
Age-related degeneration – Osteoarthritis, cervical spondylosis and spinal stenosis are all age-related wear-and-tear conditions which can cause neck pain.
-
Nerve compression – Pressure on nerves from mechanical strain within the neck and shoulders, along with pathologies like herniated or bulging discs can cause pain, numbness and tingling.
-
Injuries – You may experience neck pain if you have a fall or suffer whiplash from a car accident.
-
Stress – Muscles can become tense if you are emotionally stressed and this can result in pain and stiffness in your neck.
-
Disease – Meningitis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, cancer, and viral infections can all cause neck pain.
Neck pain can be very limiting with significant restrictions in movement. Even in cases where this happens, it is usually best to try and keep the area moving as much as you can through your comfortable range. The majority of neck issues are not serious. If you are concerned then I would recommend you have it assessed to ensure the correct advice is given.
